Council Cuts - Have Your Say!
Hastings Borough Council (HBC) are looking at a shortfall of £2.5 million in the town budget for 2013-14. They are particularly keen to hear the views of local community groups. Meeting Rooms and Office Services
Jackson Hall has a range of spaces available for hire that would be suitable for meetings, training, interviews or events. Prices are very reasonable, with lower rates for HVA members, and a bursary scheme for new groups. HVA can also provide a mailbox service to HVA members as part of a virtual office, as well as equipment hire and photocopying services. Getting Your Message Across - Training
HVA is running its popular half day session for voluntary and community groups on how to generating and dealing with publicity. This is a free half day introductory course aimed at staff, volunteers and management committee members of organisations with current up to date membership of HVA. 10 places are available with a limit of 2 people per organisation. Ageism No Longer Acceptable Under New Legislation
New legislation implemented as the final part of the Equality Act 2010 will make it unlawful to treat a person differently because of their age.
There will be specific exceptions which will continue to allow positive differential treatment, such as free bus passes and free flu jabs for older people, or commercial discounts for younger or older people.
At the same time, it will still be lawful for insurance companies and other financial services to use age when assessing risk in relation to the services they provide.
Healthy Cooking in the Community: Cookery Leader Training
Applications are now being accepted for upcoming Healthy Cooking in the Community: Cookery Leader Training courses. The course offers two days of participatory cooking and healthy eating knowledge for those who are passionate about food and wish to set-up and run their own cooking club in their community. Help with One Off Project?
We have the volunteers and a budget for a one off project within Hastings and St Leonards that will benefit either an organisation or individual. This could possibly be helping decorate a community hall or helping with a garden restoration project, to name a few ideas. We would love to hear of any other suggestions that you might have that would enable Sainsbury’s to help our community. Living with MS Day
Hastings and Rother Multiple Sclerosis Society are holding a free ‘Living with MS’ day on Tuesday 16 October between 10am – 3pm at AZUR Marine Pavilion, St. Leonards. This will be of interest to anyone affected by MS – newly diagnosed, long term sufferer, carer or family member. Health Improvement Small Grants
Does your organisation help to improve people's health, such as increasing physical activity, improving mental health, or reducing accidents? The East Sussex Health Improvement Partnerships (HIMP) have funding available through their small grants programmes, to support organisations to improve health in their area. Participatory Evaluation Training
Friday 30 November 2012, 9.30am - 4pm, Brighton, free to voluntary and community groups. This course will look at how evaluation can create a knowledge base among local people and community groups. Practical examples will be shared on how tools for collective evaluation can nurture stronger, more organised groups while strengthening wider community resources and networks.

LSCB Child Protection Awareness Training for Community Groups
ESCVYS is working with the LSCB and AiRs to provide child protection awareness training for community groups at a reduced price of £17.50. The courses will be on Friday 19 October (book by 5 October) in the 3VA Annexe in Eastbourne and on Wednesday 28 November (book by 14 November) at Jackson Hall, Portland Place, Hastings. Sessional Tutors in Hastings and St Leonards
The WEA is looking for sessional tutors to teach on our community learning programme in Hastings & St Leonards.
We urgently need experienced Literacy Tutors, ESOL Tutors, and tutors with experience of working in health, personal development and wellbeing. Applications from tutors with experience of working in the health service or nursing are particularly welcome. Applicants need to be over 18 years old, with relevant teaching qualifications and able to travel in Hastings.
